March 1971 is the earliest build date
we have found for the PD3000. NACC built
the PD3000 cars to carry a variety of bulk
powdered commodities that are sensitive
to moisture or that must be kept clean
and free from outside contaminants. Some
materials include bentonite, calcium
carbonate, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide),
cement, fly ash, lime, limestone pellets, salt,
sand, and talc just to name a few.
Pressure discharge cars use compressed
air to unload their contents. Just above
each discharge pipe connection is the
air inlet connection. Air is pumped into
the car to force the contents out the discharge
pipes. The materials are often transferred
to a receiving silo or hopper. In today's
world of intermodal transload facilities,
unloading a PD3000 into one or more pressure
discharge type highway trailers is a common
practice.
